Native Austinite Bryce Gilmore of Barley Swine and Odd Duck will have to wait another year for his first James Beard Award. The four-time finalist for the prestigious award lost out to Justin Yu of Houston’s Oxheart on Monday night in Chicago.

Gilmore took the events in stride and was gracious in acknowledging Yu’s victory.

“While I didn’t win the Beard Award this year it’s always a great honor to be nominated. The competition was stiff and I send my sincerest congratulations to chef Justin Yu; it was well-deserved,” GIlmore said. “I’m looking forward to getting back to Austin and continuing to strive ahead with Barley Swine and Odd Duck. I’d also like to thank my staff, family and customers throughout the years for the continued support. This honor would not be happening if not for them.”

Gilmore’s defeat last year came at the hands of fellow Austinite Aaron Franklin, who was on hand at Monday night’s ceremony serving as one of the Gala Reception Chefs.
